The Lincoln Cottage was the retreat for Abraham Lincoln during his Presidency. It is about two miles in the northern portion of DC on a high hill.
Lincoln would ride from the White House in the evening through the wooded trails with only a small guard of soldiers and ride back to downtown Washington in the morning.
At the time, it also was the bivouac site for Army regiments and was a National Cemetery.
